Slow Sips was a pop-up exhibition curated by Betchouf which hosts South West Asian and North African (SWANA) artists based within so-called Australia. The work reflects slow mediums of practice: sewing, writing, printing, storytelling and questioning to explore themes of identity, heritage, migration, memory, and the complex interplay between the culture of SWANA and our adopted homes.
This exhibition guided its audience to move slowly through the work, each with its own story to tell. Some works are complete, others are new, but all ideas have been steeping for a while.

Together, we hold culture in many languages, wombs, bellies, threads, meals, and gestures. Slow Sips is about collective storytelling over cups of tea and coffee, reading histories and predicting futures.

This collaboration with Unheard of Hijabi, aims to showcase hijab-wearing Muslim women through a lens that isn’t afraid of being bold, striking and wildly unconventional. Adorned in motorcycle and karate gear, the models exude confidence in their unorthodox style - an ode to what the brand is all about. Heavily influenced by fashion editorials from the 90s/Y2K era and the doodle-bomb art movement, Abuljebain sprinkles her illustrative flair over each photograph, accentuating the campaigns unapologetic edge and ultimately, bringing each portrait to life.
